"How to Tell a Story and Other Essays" is a classic collection of essays first published in 1897 under the direction of Mark Twain, America’s most famous satirist. It is but one volume in the phenomenal 29-volume Oxford Mark Twain.

"Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offences," the best-known and best-loved essay in this collection, is Mark Twain’s how-to guide for the would-be author. A hilarious and cutting critique of what not to do, this deliciously wicked essay also reveals what writers should and must do if they want their fiction to come alive--as Twain's own fiction always does.

In "How to Tell a Story," the title piece, Twain takes on such mysteries as the perfectly-timed pause and the uses of the dead-pan mask, and bluntly describes his own efforts to sharpen his platform skills. In "What Paul Bourget Thinks of Us," Twain lays out a job description for the "native novelist" that is as fresh and accurate today as when Twain first wrote it.

Other essays include: "In Defense of Harriet Shelley", "Mental Telegraphy Again", "A Little Note to M. Paul Bourget", "The Invalid's Story", "The Wounded Soldier", and "The Golden Arm".

This volume of essays serves as a wonderful reminder of what a fine and funny writer Mark Twain was. Anyone who cares about storytelling or writing will find Twain’s clever suggestions in this volume charming and fascinating.

  • War and Peace is a novel by Leo Tolstoy, first published from 1865 to 1869, which tells the story of Russian society during the Napoleonic Era. It is usually described as one of Tolstoy's two major masterpieces (the other being Anna Karenina) as well as one of the world's greatest novels.

War and Peace offered a new kind of fiction, with a great many characters caught up in a plot that covered nothing less than the grand subjects indicated by the title, combined with the equally large topics of youth, marriage, age, and death.

  • Uncle Tom's Cabin is one of those books that everybody has heard of, but few people have actually read. It deserves to be read - not just because it is one of the bestselling books of all time, nor the case that its vivid dramatization of slavery’s cruelties so aroused readers, that Abraham Lincoln told Stowe her work had been a catalyst for the Civil War. This is a book that changed history.
